Methods for calculating coexistence mechanisms: beyond scaling factors

چکیده

How do species coexist? A framework known as modern coexistence theory can ‘measure coexistence' by partitioning invasion growth rates into mechanisms, terms which correspond to classes of explanations for coexistence. There are several reasonable ways define each depending on exactly how a perturbed low density (the invader) is compared other that remain at their typical densities residents). Using conceptual arguments and two case studies, we compare five methods calculating mechanisms: 1) scaling factors, the traditional approach attempts eliminate linear effects regulating factors; 2) simple comparison, gives equal weight all resident species; 3) generation time scaling, novel method corrects intrinsic differences in population-dynamical speed; 4) β where scaled measure relative sensitivity competition; 5) invader–invader previously obscure focal itself high versus density. We find conventional factors lead nonsensical results when have strong asymmetric niche differences; though be useful certain theoretical they not recommended explaining real communities. Invader–invader comparisons also problematic, effectively specialization or differentiation. The universally-applicable comparison often works well, but give counterintuitive disparate times. well models, faces implementation problems complex models. tentatively recommend all-purpose mechanisms.

Methods for calculating factors of safety for plant stems.

The concept of a 'factor of safety' is used by biologists and engineers who generally agree that structures must be mechanically reliable, i.e. that structures must be capable of coping with unprecedented loads without failing. These factors can be calculated for individual structures or for a population of otherwise equivalent mechanical structures differing in their load capabilities. Objecti...

Comparison of different numerical methods for calculating stress intensity factors in analysis of fractured structures

In this research, an efficient Galerkin Finite Volume Method (GFVM) along with the h–refinement adaptive process and post–processing error estimation analysis is presented for fracture analysis. The adaptive strategy is used to produce more accurate solution with the least computational cost. To investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the developed model, the GFVM is compared with two versio...

Analytical Comparison of Methods for Calculating the Completeness of VGI

Spatial data, which is one of the main needs of human societies from business organizations to the general users today, cannot meet the needs of a wide range of users without changing the structure of conventional methods of data registration and updating on a metropolitan scale. Open Street Map, as one of the most successful implementations of the crowdsourcing approach to spatial data with th...

Economic Mechanisms For Efficient Wireless Coexistence

Unchecked greed can adversely impact the efficiency of wireless systems. Individual devices have no motivation to conserve shared resources, and this inevitably leads to poor utilization of spectrum. Indeed, it has been oft demonstrated that there is a real risk of spiraling performance losses, culminating in a classic Tragedy of the Commons. Recognizing that efficient coexistence requires allo...
